Prof. Not (Noht), the head of the Institute of Tropical Diseases in Hamburg, made the following statement during his stay in Ulcinj in 1925: “I have never seen a place so full of stars as Ulcinj.” The value of this region is versatile and great for the human body. Prof. Dr. Lemoh (Lemoch), President of the European League for Rheumatism, said during his stay in Ulcinj in 1964: “In the therapeutic sense, Ulcinj has a great future”. A scientist of world reputation, Mihailo Pupin, in June 1919, through his deputy, requested a license to open a sanatorium for the treatment of certain diseases and illnesses from the Ministry of Interior of the Kingdom of Montenegro. All of this contributed to Ulcinj being declared a “spa and climatic health resort” in 1929 by a decree of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
The advantages of Ulcinj’s climate are most significant for living conditions, and the water temperature allows sunbathing during 6 months, from May to October. In summer, the sea transparency reaches 38 m, and on the open sea off Ulcinj as much as 56 m was measured, which is the highest value on the Adriatic. The sand on the beaches actually has these long healing effects because it is so clean and fine and does not contain any impurities such as soil, mud, organic materials or others. This is because Ulcinj is surrounded by an unpolluted environment, without any industry. In terms of chemical composition, Ulcinj sand consists of about 30 minerals that are biologically very active. It is slightly radioactive, which makes it suitable for medical purposes, especially in diseases affecting locomotor organs, as well as spinal problems, rheumatism, herniated discs, sciatica and all the consequences when these organs are injured.
The sulfur water that rises near the sea at Ladies Beach has “miraculous” healing properties. It is said that this water can help infertile women. In terms of mineral composition, it is very rich. The mineral mud (peloid) is spread in the basin of the Ulcinj salt mine, 2 km from the sea. Scientific studies of this mud confirm that it is one of the highest-quality muds ever found and studied on the Adriatic.
The unrefined sea salt, taken from the Ulcinj Saltworks basin, has a “concentrated sea” that can be used for medicinal purposes by simply adding water, so that the same effects as seawater can be achieved even at home, and it is particularly suitable for the cure of rheumatism and all organs used for movement.
All these factors can sometimes replace medications and sometimes with their help achieve better and lasting healing results. It is rare to find so many natural healing properties in one place.
